SF Benson

"I love answering the question “what if” by writing young adult and new adult Dystopian/science fiction and paranormal stories. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I took a few varied paths to get to this point—blogger/reviewer, customer service representative, receptionist, marketing assistant, cashier, veterinary assistant, editorial assistant… I like to think that those positions provided ‘food’ for my creative brain.

When I’m not devouring countless books, I’m taking care of my family, which includes a few furry members. At one point in my adult life, I had a household which included three Samoyeds, saltwater fish, a hamster, and three guinea pigs.

Currently, I reside in Georgia, but have lived in Michigan and California. My ideal location would be Michigan with southern California weather for Spring, Summer, and Winter. Nothing beats Fall in Michigan."

RESCUE: the Alliance Chronicles, Book 2

Zared Aoki is a young adult living in a world of hard choices. His whole life comes down to choices. Choose to live. Choose to die. Choose to love. He takes control and, in spite of the fact that he’s a marked man, makes the choice to rescue the love of his life, Tru Shepard, from a remote military compound where she’s being held prisoner.

There are a few obstacles in his way—she’s being held by her almost-fiancĂ©, the government has a warrant out for his arrest, and there are people wanting to trade his life for the SIM card. The piece of tech, which holds the fate of mankind, means nothing to Zared. He’s not proud of how he obtained it, but none of that matters without Tru.

Zared gets help in the form of a friend, Asher Jones. That help comes with challenges—a traumatized Riza cadet, running from a crazed lunatic, and coming face-to-face with someone from his past.

Tru has choices, too. She can marry a man she despises, or face her death sentence. And then there’s a third choice, one that can change her life forever.

Holden Pratt, her intended fiancĂ©, only sees one choice—marrying Tru, no matter how much she protests.

But all things come with a price. For Zared that price means either saving his future or saving his past.

Bonus Content

“Imagine a world free of sickness and disease. Imagine a world where everyone contributes to a better life. No more crime, poverty, mental imbalance, gender confusion, or prejudice. Imagine a world full of strong, intelligent, and capable beings. This is what the UN’s ban on human engineering is against. The UN wants to perpetuate the myth of imbalance being the best fight against discrimination. Let your voice be heard. Stand against this barbaric policy and demand a chance for true human design.”
(A message from the Centers for Human Advancement)
I ran my finger along Dr. Aoki’s butter soft leather sofa. Oh, such a heavenly feeling. She was fond of wearing clothing made from leather. One day, I too, would be draped in it.
I planned to indulge in all the things I had never experienced. Everything I ever had was rough and functional. My room was straight off a small child’s Christmas wish list. I was told it was fitting for a young girl. So. Wrong.
Dr. Aoki and even Tru got to enjoy a room which was an ode to luxury—a bed with silk sheets, plush cream carpeting, and even golden woodwork. I ran my hand across the marble mantel. The heat on my hands was soothing, mesmerizing.
It was unfair to deprive me of such pleasures. I deserved them just as much as any other human being. It wasn’t as if I begged to be created.
Yes, I agreed to help Tru, my Original, and I would. But I needed to think about my needs, my concerns. There was no way I was staying cooped up like a bird in a cage. I was meant to thrive, to enjoy everything life had to offer.
Taa, I had to get used to calling her that, said I had to have dinner with Holden tonight. I did not appreciate what the prick did to Tru. I was told that what happened between them was consensual. But he took advantage of the situation. What I had in store for him… well… he wasn’t the only one who could take advantage of opportunities.
I walked to the window and pulled back the heavy silk drape. It was so beautiful outside. A blanket of white covered the buildings and ground and clung to the trees. Snow. An immaculate landscape untainted by the cruel hands of mankind. I looked forward to walking outside of this fortress. There were so many things I wanted to do.
First off, I would not be able to call myself Shara anymore. It would seem…what is the word…inappropriate. I needed my own identity, but one worthy of being Tru’s sister.
I sat at the holographic computer and did an Ubernet search. Amita is Hebrew for truth. Fitting. Shadia is Arabic for sings. Also fitting. Plus, I liked how that sounded. Tahsin is Arabic for improvement. I am an improvement on the original Truly Shara Shepard. Perfect. When I leave this prison I will call myself Shadia Tahsin Shepard.
And what all did I want to do? I wanted my kind to have a place in this world without having to wait for an Original to be killed. We should not be a replacement for anyone. We deserved the right to speak up and discover our own destinies.
“Hello, Shara,” It was Taa dressed in an exquisite purple silk blouse, black slim skirt, and shiny black stilettos. The woman had impeccable taste. Taa did not walk into a room. She floated in with her hips rolling and undulating. I wanted her style and grace. She would be useful in teaching me what to wear and how to carry myself.
“Hi, Dr. A…I mean Taa. Everything taken care of?”
“Yes. What are you up to?”
“Nothing important.” I closed the screen I was looking at. “What should I wear to dinner?”
“Tru’s very casual. You’ll find jeans, a t-shirt, and her favorite high-heeled boots in my closet.”
I wrinkled my nose. “Could she not dress up a little? I really like what you are wearing.”
Taa crossed her arms. “We talked about this. In order for it to work you must emulate Tru completely. Are we going to have a problem?”
I plastered a smile on my face. “Of course. There will be no problems.”
She frowned. “We must do something about your speech. You’re too formal.”
I did not appreciate how this was going. First, I have to dress like a peon, and now I’m expected to sound like one. “I’m sorry. No problem at all. I’ve got this.”
“Good. Don’t forget what’s expected of you.”
I knew exactly what was expected of me. Unfortunately, what was expected, and what will happen were two different things.
Thank you so much for visiting me. There's a deleted scene from THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS hidden someplace.  My lucky book number is 8.

You are hunting on...

I'm Suzanne Lazear, author of the elfpunk THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS which is about dragons, demons, rockstars, and mayhem. The band in the book, The Freakshow, has 5 members, all of them paranormal. I also write the Aether Chronicles series, which is about steampunk faeries.

Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the blue team, and then add them up. Hint: the secret number is highlighted RED. Once you've added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify. Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

And now on to the author I'm hosting today:

Kathryn Holmes grew up in Maryville, Tennessee, where she was an avid reader and an aspiring writer from an early age. She now lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and piles upon piles of books. A graduate of The New School’s MFA in Creative Writing program, Kathryn works as a freelance dance journalist, among other writing gigs. She is the author of The Distance Between Lost and Found and How It Feels to Fly.

A struggle with body dysmorphia forces one girl to decide if letting go of her insecurity also means turning her back on her dreams.

Sam has always known she’d be a professional dancer—but that was before her body betrayed her, developing unmanageable curves in all the wrong places. Lately, the girl staring back at Sam in the mirror is unrecognizable. Dieting doesn’t work, ignoring the whispers is pointless, and her overbearing mother just makes it worse.

Following a series of crippling anxiety attacks, Sam is sent to a treatment camp for teens struggling
with mental and emotional obstacles. Forced to open up to complete strangers, Sam must get through the program if she wants to attend a crucial ballet intensive later in the summer. It seems hopeless until she starts confiding in a camp counselor who sparks a confidence she was sure she’d never feel again. But when she’s faced with disappointing setbacks, will Sam succumb to the insecurity that imprisons her?

This compelling story examines one girl’s efforts to overcome her worst enemy: herself.

 Deleted Scene

Hi, YASH Participants!

My second book, HOW IT FEELS TO FLY, is about a ballet dancer, Sam, whose severe body-image and anxiety issues get her sent to a therapy camp for teen artists and athletes. In this deleted scene, my characters have been learning breathing exercises that they can use to calm their anxiety when they feel stressed out. Unfortunately, the laughter and good energy the characters share in this moment just didn’t work in revisions. As much as I liked it, the scene needed to go.

*       *        *       *       *        *       *

I curl up in Child’s Pose. Spine rounded, forehead on the floor, hands by my feet. I register the room growing dimmer around me, even through my closed eyelids. I hear the shuffling and shifting of people getting into position, how their clothes drag on the carpet, how their movements push the air. But I stay still. I breathe.

I feel a little like a turtle inside its shell, or an ostrich with its head in the ground.

There’s no one but me here, no body but mine, and I am nothing but breath.

My ribcage expands and contracts, expands and contracts.

My legs start to buzz from being folded so tight. I let them buzz.

I think, through the whiteness in my head, This might work.

I wait for a snarky response from my inner voice. None comes.

I allow myself a small smile.

And then I hear a snore. It’s soft, but unmistakable. Someone is definitely asleep.

I’m trying to tune the snoring out when the giggles start.

I roll my head to the left, molasses-slow, feeling the carpet fibers peel away from my forehead. I blink my eyes open, letting the room come into focus.

Zoe is curled up in Child’s Pose a few feet away. And her body is shaking with laughter that she’s trying—and failing—to keep silent. She looks over at me, and I see tears streaming down her face.

“I’m sorry,” Zoe mouths, exaggerating the syllables. To my surprise, she looks like she really is sorry. Or at least, not intentionally trying to cause a disturbance. For once. Still staring at me, she clenches her lips shut, but that only leads to a snort escaping out her nose.

Her snort is matched by another snore from my other side, which is followed by the sound of stifled laughter behind me.

I turn my head. Dominic’s the one asleep. Flat on his back in an afternoon sunbeam, like a cat. Mouth open.

And when I sneak a glance behind me, I see Katie lying on her back, hands on her stomach, looking back and forth between Zoe and Dominic with a mischievous grin on her face. She catches me staring, and her smile grows. “Sam!” she stage-whispers. “You have the most amazing carpet-print on your forehead!”

I push up to my forearms, feeling my face with one hand. My forehead is lumpy.

Now Zoe is laughing out loud. “You do!” she squeals. “You totally do! You look like—like—”

“You look like a Klingon!” Omar blurts from across the room.

“Okay, everyone,” Jim says loudly. “Let’s try to focus on our breathing.”

“Yes, please,” Jenna hisses from across the room, mock-indignant. “I have anxiety to exhale, if you don’t mind!”

The room goes quiet. And Dominic chooses that moment to let out another snore—his loudest yet.

That sets Zoe off all over again. “I’m sorry…I can’t…” She gasps for air. “Can somebody wake him up?”

Jim gently shakes Dominic’s shoulders. But I guess it wasn’t gentle enough, because Dominic sits up like a shot, looking around wildly. “What the—?”

“Nice nap?” Katie asks, giggling.

Jim runs a hand through his dark hair. “Okay, let’s try to refocus. We still have some time left….”

“It wasn’t just Dominic,” Zoe says, still laughing. “I couldn’t stop thinking about curling up like this on the court, with my tennis skirt riding up over my butt.”

Katie giggles. “What if I laid down under the vault? I wouldn’t be in the way.”

“Center ice,” Jenna says crisply. “I could slide to a stop right in front of the judges, and then just lie there. Breathing.”

“To be—” Omar begins in an overly dramatic voice, stopping to take a deep inhale and exhale. “Or not to be?” Another inhale and exhale. “That—” He makes his next breath long and ragged. “—is the question!”

I picture myself in the wings, backstage, in a tutu. Crouched on the floor with the tutu fanning up over my butt—a sparkly tulle half-moon.

We’re all laughing now. And I wonder if everyone else feels how the energy in the room has changed.

For the first time, I feel like maybe we’re all in this together.

Arm the cupcake cannons, the rockstars have arrived!

It's the release day for part one of THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS! As you know, I'm really excited about this book. It's an elfpunk set in my hometown of Tempe, AZ.

Have you gotten your copy yet? It's only $1.99.   (Yes, there will eventually be a print copy and an audio book. If you're waiting for these, would you please share the e-book link with your e-book living friends while you wait? A certain amount of e-books has to sell before the print copy kicks in.) Thanks to everyone who's already ordered their copy, I really appreciate it!

Eighteen-year-old Bitsy Butler has never quite fit in, not with the dragons who raised her, the druid who took her in, or even with the non-human members of the cirque noir punk band she thinks of as family. Her chance to prove she can make it on her own comes with her band's first big solo tour. It’s all going according to plan when an angel walks into a bar and demands help with his demon problem.

If she doesn't step up, a magical war will break out, threatening Arizona and all those who call it home. With the help of a human, a sexy dragon, and the members of her band, Bitsy must stop an angry mob of chaos demons before the band leaves for their next tour stop.

It’s nice to be needed, but Bitsy has no idea how to defeat the demons and she just might get herself killed trying. But then, at least one problem would be solved...

Fitting in doesn’t matter if you’re dead.

I've got a couple of fun release events that everyone can attend!

One Week Until the Rockstars Come!!!

THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS (book 1) releases in ONE WEEK! (September 26, 2016)  Who's excited? I can't wait for you to meet Bitsy and her cirque noir punk band, The Freakshow.

Please join me on facebook on September 26th at 5 pm PST for a release party with lots of fun and prizes.

I am so excited to show you the cover for THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS (part one), which releases from Shine on 9/26/16. The story will be released in e-book form in two parts. You can pre-order part one now. It's only $1.99. Print and audio will follow, I'll keep you posted.

Great cover, right?

It's Elfpunk, which is similar to Urban Fantasy. While it's not steampunk, Bitsy is a steampunk. She's the ringmaster of a cirque noir punk band and has really great shoes. Though four in heels aren't always the best for running up and down mountains or chasing demons...

Eric, my dragon shifter, or drakken, as I call them, was another fun character to write. He helps Bitsy with her task, though she really doesn't want his help.

FYI, this books is listed as New Adult, since the characters are 18. There's a little romance, but no sexytimes; she's too busy saving the world. There is drinking, swearing, mayhem, and one of the characters is an incubus.

Stay tuned for contests and release day fun. I hope you love my rockstars, dragon shifter, and other characters, as much as I do!

Pre-order link for THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS is live!

Psstt...the pre-order link for the e-book of THE SECRET LIVES OF ROCKSTARS (part one) is up. It's only $1.99

Just so you know, this is part 1 of 2 -- about 40k or 1/2 a book. There will be a print version. I'll keep you posted.

I can't wait for you to meet Bitsy, Jules, Eric, Phil, Matt, and Aiden.
